Cancun Military - Don't worry if you see military personnel walking around popular tourist spots in the Cancun area. They are part of the Safe Beach program, and an operation called Red Circle. The name of the red circle actually refers to the fact that military officials are confined to the Cancun Hotel Zone. They actively patrol the area, especially at night around some of the more popular nightclubs and bars in the region.
Over the weekend, an estimated 300 soldiers will be actively patrolling the Cancun Hotel Zone area. They are believed to be part of a large contingent sent to the state in the past few days. Over the weekend it was announced that 18,000 members of the military have been sent to different parts of Mexico with different tasks but many include protecting tourists and stopping crime.

About 1,200 of those 18,000 troops are stationed in the Cancun area. Military personnel stationed in the region are often charged with patrol duties and various types of peacekeeping tasks. These soldiers will be divided into different groups in the region to patrol tourist spots in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Sand And Soldiers Mix As Troops Move In To Protect Cancun Tourists
Military personnel reported no major incidents throughout the weekend. Especially in the areas near the bars and nightclubs they patrol. Things could get busier in the coming weeks though with 3 million tourists expected for Easter.
Holiday occupancy is set to reach over 80% as Holy Week and Easter weekend approach. There is still no official word on how many officers will be patrolling the streets. As we mentioned earlier, only 300 military personnel were seen in and around the hotel zone. A total of 1200 are said to be located around the Riviera Maya region.
As we reported last week, marines fully armed with high powers continue to patrol the beaches of Cancun. Tourists were more than happy to stop the service men and women for photos. Again, it appears that no major incidents have occurred in areas heavily patrolled by Marines.
The beaches, however, became the main focus of attention due to an incident where people on jet skis opened fire, luckily most people fired their guns into thin air. This led to a marine presence on the beaches in December last year. Although similar incidents have not been reported recently, the Marines are set to maintain a strong presence in these locations.
At Least Four Killed In Gunfight In Mexican Resort Of Cancun
Terminal 3 at Cancun Airport had to be evacuated on Monday after a panicked traveler mistakenly thought he heard gunshots but it was actually 3 signals. Confused tourists rush out, unsure of what is really going on. The event is likely to bring a large military presence to the airport.
Access to the airport was also problematic last week as truck drivers blocked the road leading to the airport. Regardless of the situation it seems like good advice to head to the airport with plenty of time before your flight.
