Ruger 22 Takedown - I wanted to post a small update to the Brownells 10/22 Takedown Rifle project as I have made some changes since my last 10/22 Takedown blog post.
The most notable change was the addition of a Magpul X-22 Backpacker optic mount to move the Primary Arms Micro Red Dot Sight from the receiver to the barrel.

I decided to give it a try because it seemed to make sense from a reproductive perspective. Since the optics are always aligned with the holes, any misalignment between the barrel and the receiver when collapsing and re-aligning will not affect zeroing.

Another change I made was resetting the factory bolts. I came across a 10/22 bolt rework service from Connecticut Precision Chambering (or CPC), specifically regarding the 10/22 crown distance. Aftermarket bolts tend to be cut to a smaller size for better fit and accuracy, and factory bolts can be refinished or ground to account for a longer head. I looked at the CPC website, saw the services they have to offer, and decided to give it a try.
I just picked up a new factory bolt from Brownells and sent it straight to CPC to have the bolt refinished with an EDM cutter. The total CPC for this service is $60 (including return shipping). I could have shipped the bolts that were in the gun, but I wanted to see if another OEM bolt would be as ugly and ugly as the one I found at Midway. The one from Brownells looks very clean.
Either way, CPC conversions are very good. CPC quoted a two week turnaround time for the bolts, but CPC returned the bolts in the mail the same day they received mine.
The above service was actually $43 + $7 return shipping, but I paid an extra $10 because if I didn't pick one from CPC, I would have to buy it myself.

As for the setting pin that controls the movement of the firing pin, I have never heard of this technology. But it seems like a good idea.
I went up range to verify the gun's performance with the new bolt and it seems to have a little more consistency at 25 yards. Not to mention that out of 100+ rounds, I've only had one ejection and feed failure.
I also tried several types of ammo that I had tried before, including Armscor which I had never tried because I forgot the brick that Target Sports USA gave me for free a few years ago.
25 yards is between 0.6" and 0.8" long, so three-quarters of an inch is about the same length. It seems that these groups can be much stronger when they are closer to the optics than the 2MOA red dot. But after the bolt exchange, it seems that all the ammo fires consistently. In previous tests, Federal Champion High Velocity Ammunition was printed on paper with large groups (about 1 inch at 25 yards).

Anyway, I think this is the final touch on my Brownells 10/22 Takedown rifle. As for this gun, I am very happy with how it performs. I've found that I can print 1/2" at 25 yards with this gun using the CCI Mini-Mag, and I'll probably have some ammunition for this gun. But the high-speed FPA seems to hover between 0.6 inches and 0.7 inches on a regular basis.
There is a lesson to be learned from this construction. I would have bought the upper receiver (BRN-22T) instead of the picatinny rail version (BRN-22TR). Since I have a small red dot mounted on the barrel, the picatinny rail is damaged, mainly because it blocks the metal frame on the Tactical Solutions barrel. Note that I have discovered why the metal sights on Tactical Solutions rifles do not have the same problem. Tactical Solutions Takedown receivers have a central Picatinny rail cutout, providing a metal sight through the rail.
So if someone wants to build a 10/22 Loader from scratch, keep the above in mind if you are thinking of buying a Tactical Solutions barrel with metal sights.
On a final note, I found a case for the 10/22 Takedown, which was recommended to me on Reddit.

When it comes to semi automatic 22 rimfire rifles there are several popular styles. This part over the years has left their mark. Among these, Ruger has a wide range of accessories, triggers, barrels, stocks, magazines, and more. Lucky for us, Davidson has teamed up with Ruger and Magpul to create the perfect Backpacker version of the 10/22 Takedown rifle.
Ruger Introduces 10/22 Takedown Lite
The 10/22 is a small, practical gun, and I've been using it for over 30 years, but this is my first experience with their Takedown brand. Did you know? I love so much.
The Magpul X-22 Backpacker Stock is a thoughtful and cool piece in itself. Here are the details:
I'm almost an adult, but some things still turn me on a little, and this gun is one of them. Yes, disassembled guns are cool, but guns with parts kept together are even cooler. This product is very beautiful.
Some of the scale makes it easy to carry with a pistol grip when you install it.

Unlike the "Uncle Mike" type bolts I've seen on rifles before, this one is set up for a tactical find. A push button recorder like this can be used if a metal insert (not included) is inserted into the load hole.
See the size of the barrel in the picture. When you put it on, it goes into the rubber in the butt.
The Magpul X-22 Backpacker Stock takes full advantage of the 10/22 Takedown Stock and offers more functionality including allowing the two main parts of the rifle to be stored together.
The barrel extension goes to the black rubber when you build the two sides of the gun.

Storing the barrel is easy, as is removing it to reassemble the gun. The stock parts fit well and have a nice shape; not too cruel, but easy to handle.
To remove the barrel and front, squeeze the buttons on the side to release it from the stock, then turn it away from the stock.
There is also a reservoir inside the gun. Perhaps the biggest flaw of the stock is the memory cap (they call it "grip core"), which is not connected when it is turned on. I can't say I care personally, but people have proven they can and will dispose of any gun
