The hard thing about reviewing a .22 pistol like the Ruger Mark IV Tactical is deciding what to compare it to. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, the gun that started it all for Bill Ruger in 1949—the Standard Model—became the standard by which all other 22 guns are measured. The Mark IV - Ruger's current model for the classic design - continues to carry the colors even in the 21st.
The Ruger Mark IV Tactical is one of several versions now in production that retain the Nambu-like profile and feel of the original standard model. The rifle that got Ruger into business was inspired by the World War II Japanese Nambu, and today's Mark IV Tactical has the same lines and function. It is a recoil-operated semi-automatic that feeds from a slim 10-round, single-stack magazine. Instead of a slide and frame, the gun features a tubular receiver that sits on top of the frame. The walking bolt assembly is inside the receiver and uses a spring to return the bolt to the assembly itself. The bolt is activated by pulling back the two protruding tabs on the rear of the receiver.

To disassemble the Ruger Mark IV Tactical, simply close the bolt, remove the magazine, place the gun in the "safe" position and press the button under the rear of the bolt. The receiver/tube assembly will rotate and lift the frame without the need for tools. Then simply pull the ball assembly back and it's free for the receiver. This allows for quick and easy cleaning of the receiver and cleaning of the muzzle chamber without interruption. Easy reconnection.

The recoil spring, firing pin and extractor assembly can be easily removed from the bolt and cleaned. A closed receiver usually does not allow much dirt on the trigger and hammer mechanisms.
