The Mark IV Tactical comes equipped with a heavy barrel, lightweight optics and rails, and a sewn muzzle. Tyler Friel

The hard thing about reviewing a .22 pistol like the Ruger Mark IV Tactical is deciding what to compare it to. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, the gun that started it all for Bill Ruger in 1949—the Standard Model—became the standard by which all other 22 guns are measured. The Mark IV - Ruger's current model for the classic design - continues to carry the colors even in the 21st.

The Ruger Mark IV Tactical is one of several versions now in production that retain the Nambu-like profile and feel of the original standard model. It features a heavy barrel with a threaded muzzle and has aluminum lugs attached to the bottom of the barrel and runs the distance between the front and rear sights above the receiver and bear.

In the case of the Ruger Mark IV Tactical, you can take "tactical" to mean "ready to go." Although the Mark series of pistols saw battles with calm specialists, in dark places on a moonless night (or was it?), ie.

Whether you're looking for a homemade dog-defense gun, a nocturnal bug solution for those in the back forty, or the coolest gun imaginable, the Mark IV Tactical is ready to be equipped to your heart's content.

In short, the Ruger Mark IV Tactical is a Mark IV with a threaded muzzle and accessory rails attached to it. The Mark IV has many updates from the original Standard Image, but its heart is still there. The Mark IV Tactical is a .22 pistol with height - something you'll notice the moment you pick it up. This is a gun that feels like a real gun – where most modern .22s feel unusually light for guns of their size.

The rifle that got Ruger into business was inspired by the World War II Japanese Nambu, and today's Mark IV Tactical has the same lines and function. It is a recoil-operated semi-automatic that feeds from a slim 10-round, single-stack magazine. Instead of a slide and frame, the gun features a tubular receiver that sits on top of the frame. The walking bolt assembly is inside the receiver and uses a spring to return the bolt to the assembly itself. The bolt is activated by pulling back the two protruding tabs on the rear of the receiver.

The Mark IV Tactical has its roots in the Ruger Standard model, released in 1949 and seen here in the pages of Outdoor Life in January, 1950. Tyler Friel

This design has been expanded over the years but retains the basic feel and functionality that made it so popular. Many point models featured heavy barrels, and clip-together upper receiver/barrel assemblies have been around for some time. The Mark IV is an excellent and quiet pressing platform, and there is no 21

The century pistol is complete except for the tactical light and red dot. Ruger Mark IV Tactical's sturdy rails will allow you to mount almost any light optic or red dot you can find.

The universal calling card of .22 LR ammunition is that it is dirty, and one of the outstanding features of the Ruger Mark IV is that it is very easy to disassemble and clean. Wax lubrication and powder condensation will find their way into every nook and cranny of a .22 gun - and will eventually cause reliability problems in the best of them.

To disassemble the Ruger Mark IV Tactical, simply close the bolt, remove the magazine, place the gun in the "safe" position and press the button under the rear of the bolt. The receiver/tube assembly will rotate and lift the frame without the need for tools. Then simply pull the ball assembly back and it's free for the receiver. This allows for quick and easy cleaning of the receiver and cleaning of the muzzle chamber without interruption. Easy reconnection.

The Mark IV series pistols can be easily disassembled by pressing the release button on the back of the frame. Tyler Friel

The recoil spring, firing pin and extractor assembly can be easily removed from the bolt and cleaned. A closed receiver usually does not allow much dirt on the trigger and hammer mechanisms. The internal hammer assembly sits near the rear of the frame, and the hammer moves up through a slot in the back of the bolt assembly to make contact with the firing pin—in stark contrast to how the AR-15's hammer strikes the firing pin.

The vintage Nambo-like feel of the Ruger Mark IV is intoxicating. The weight of the gun and the shape of the grip have a degree of strength and finesse, not the .22
