The concept of the "soldier-athlete" began with the development of a new science-based physical training regimen known as physical fitness training, or PRT.

PRT provides exercises; exercises and activities designed to develop soldiers' strength, endurance and mobility to successfully complete combatant tasks and combat exercises while avoiding injury.

The new PRT gives initial entry training commanders the ability to safely develop the fitness of young Soldiers, as well as improve the performance of Soldiers in formation.

To promote PRT's success, strength coaches and fitness specialists have been stationed at each major training location to help train the cadre. Results to date show that the new program contributes to increased physical fitness test results and a significant reduction in injuries.
